Red Velvet - Russian Roulette

Red Velvet - Russian Roulette [K-Pop T_T].mp4 |
If I had to choose a second Girl Group to stan as much as TWICE, it would be Red Velvet. They're girl crush but not aggressively girl crush like BLACKPINK or even ITZY. And they have a dark side, which is readily apparent in the MV to "Russian Roulette", the song that made me stan Red Velvet. Along with "Power Up", which I also subbed earlier this year, the production of the song was very different from most standard K-Pop songs. Most K-Pop songs that I know that break the mold of just one popular genre are mind-bending disruptors like "I Got a Boy" or "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend". But what "Russian Roulette" did was take a standard electropop song and infuse elements of 8-bit and chiptune into it. Genres that are considered retro in 2016, but it works.
The MV stood out to me, as well, as dark comedy and very Heathers, a late 1980s film, or Jawbreakers in the way that pretty bubblegum pop girls have a dark and violent side underneath. And that's also why I stan Red Velvet, because they took this concept and made it their own and are still likable and aegyo with their girl crush image.
So happy 5th anniversary to this iconic video. Please enjoy the subbed video and follow us on IG and TikTok and subscribe to the blog and YouTube channel.
From wiki:
"Russian Roulette" (Korean: 러시안 룰렛; RR: Reosian rullet) is a song by South Korean girl group Red Velvet for their third extended play of the same name. Written by Jo Yoon-kyung and produced by Albi Albertsson, Belle Humble and Markus Lindell, it is primarily an 8-bit influenced synth-pop song which lyrically compares the process of winning someone's heart to a game of Russian roulette. The song was released as the lead single on September 7, 2016 by SM Entertainment along with an accompanying cartoon-themed music video which saw the group mimicking cartoon tricks to pull a prank and harm each other as the video progressed.
