J.Y. Park - When We Disco (Duet with Sunmi)
When I heard J.Y. Park was having another comeback before ITZY's announced August comeback ("Not Shy") in mid-2020, I was pretty mad that PD Park would take away attention from his in label girl group. How could this late 40s man still be producing content and making comebacks? But then I heard the synthesizer soaked disco track reminiscent of T-ara's "Roly Poly", and all was forgiven. In a year when it was nothing but bad news, the K-Pop and modern Pop disco revival/nu-disco was such a breath of fresh air and a wonder to behold. J.Y. Park's track was such a simple and elegant song of longing, unrequited love, and nostalgia. And the video was a wonderful throwback to Saturday Night Fever & Pulp Fiction, as he references at the end. It came out of nowhere, for me, and surprisingly became one of my favorite tracks (not just of K-Pop) of the whole year.
So happy One year anniversary to "When We Disco". Please enjoy the subbed video and follow us on IG and TikTok and subscribe to the blog and YouTube channel.
From wiki:
"When We Disco" is a song recorded by South Korean singer-songwriters J. Y. Park and Sunmi. Written and composed by Park, it was released as a digital single on August 12, 2020 by JYP Entertainment.
J. Y. Park was inspired by Modern Talking's song "Brother Louie" which serves as the opening song for the South Korean talk show Radio Star and was stuck in his head at the time; it took him a few hours to complete the song. Park said to have used "typical instruments of the European disco genre and recorded with the equipment imbued with 80s vibes to fully recreate nostalgic melody."
