"Make You Happy" is a pre-debut extended play and title track by Japanese girl group NiziU. After the debut lineup of NiziU was revealed on Japanese survival reality show Nizi Project, it was announced on June 26, 2020 that NiziU's pre-debut EP Make You Happy would be released on June 30, 2020.

As I mention before in the "Tag Me" post, NiziU was on my radar as the girl group successor to TWICE. But perhaps therein lies the inevitable disappointment because every subsequent release of theirs following "Make you happy" has been definitely lackluster. I don't know whether it's the extremely high bar set from how great "Make you happy" is or the general lack of quality in the song writing or production but "Step and a Step", "Take a Picture", and "Poppin' Shakin" were instantly forgettable and mediocre ("Take a Picture" is not terrible IMO). It's a shame because Weeekly has had the opposite effect - every release has been getting better in quality and pop hooks and further developing their brand.

I didn't want this to be a dump on NiziU post, but I just had such high expectations for them. I'll chalk it up to them still being a new group. This is also their 1st anniversary and they are J-Pop not K-Pop so the comparisons aren't really fair. But I hope JYP and company course correct their ship soon. "Make you happy" is still very special to me. I'm a DJ and music listener of a variety of genres (I listened to Witch House, Synth Wave, & Electronica among other dark musical genres before K-Pop) so when I heard something that brought genuine joy and mainlined serotonin to my brain I thought this is fantastic and extraordinary. The closest genre in similarity to my past musical preferences was Twee-Pop.
